Habitat 21 is an initiative by Vicurban to deliver a sustainable and affordable house design to the volume housing market. Constructed by volume builder Burbank in Vicurban’s Meridian estate in Dandenong, it is a three bedroom house with a footprint significantly smaller than the conventional comparison, and with a seven star energy rating. A key focus was on spatial adaptability, in particular the front bedroom detachable as an independent unit or office, and the informal use of the garage and side yard as generous outdoor spaces on a relatively small lot. The house features one of the country’s first domestic Bluegen fuel cells.
