Antarctica was awarded commendation for the innovative design for medium density public housing within the context of outer suburban Melbourne
(see our news section)
Our competition entry for housing on 6 average sized site, proposed 12 dwellings ranging from 1 to 4 bedrooms as courtyard types, and as a mixture of single and two storey types. Each of these is adaptable to a range of household types, and convertible to much larger households.
The designs adapt to changes in household size by simple moves to join and re-separatedwellings. This can occur either in the use of the design in a wide range of scenarios, or the conversion post-construction. For example, dwellings 1 & 3 convert two 2 bedroom houses to a 5 bedroom house, dwellings 5 & 6 join and convert to a large 6 bedroom house.
The design allows further social flexibility by joining courtyard spaces to form clusters of household- particularly in pairs. An extended family might cohabit across a courtyard space, a flexible car space or a larger group might share a communal open space around a cluster of dwellings.
