A research project exploring the Spencer Street Power Station site, situated at the edge of the city grid, resulted in a collection of both new and existing buildings, which fused into a vast form resembling a walled city.
The proposition explores a particular method for engagement within existing urban fabric. Retaining all of the existing building and working within its bounds, a further accretion provides the opportunity for a richer more concentrated form of civic space.
Employing the use of colour, texture and pattern, the proposal investigates the creation of a highly fragmented building fabric. Dense internalised spaces, which draw upon the character of a baroque domed interior, fuse with the existing buildings.
Apartments, cinema, city library, cafe, art studios, gallery space and a sports centre, sit alongside the existing electrical substation, which retains its current use.
